NEW RELEASE MONDAY: MOVIE REVIEW

THE NEW MUTANTS
GENRE: Action, Sci Fi, Horror
STARRING: Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Blu Hunt, and Henry Zaga.
RUN TIME: 1hr 38min
RELEASED: August 28th, 2020

Five young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves.

This is a tale of five young people from different backgrounds and with varying demons brought together by a dark force masquerading as good to harness their new but growing abilities. Despite their differences, they must work together to free themselves and save the life of their friend who has been marked for death. This movie is mostly generic, with a lot of clichés and little, if any innovative ideas. But these shortcomings are patched up by exceptional acting by the cast, thrilling action scenes and brilliant cinematography. Not one of the best X-men movie, but definitely not one of the worst either.

RATING: 7/10

I hide my imperfection. Even from him.

A hilarious story of love, friendship and true set in high school. It is the tale of girl who on the surface appears perfect but underneath the facade is the frantic search for normal in the midst of an unusual situation. A light and funny book.

NEW RELEASE MONDAY: MOVIE REVIEW

CHEMICAL HEARTS
GENRE: Drama, Romance
STARRING: Austin Abrams and Lili Reinhart.
RUN TIME: 1hr 33min
RELEASED:  August 21st, 2020

Chemical Hearts is the story of Henry Page, a teenage student who considers himself a hopeless romantic but has never fallen in love. The young man aspires to be editor of the high school newspaper and lives happily focused on his studies to enter a good university, until Grace Town enters his class. His new partner is not exactly the girl of his dreams, but little by little he falls in love with her when the two teenagers are chosen to edit the institute newspaper.

An uncharacteristic teenage movie, leaving behind the expected clichés of this genre for a more melancholic look at love and it's baggage seen from the eyes of a young man. The movie being so far from the norm, makes for an unpredictable but pleasant experience that will leave the audience with a somber feeling. Great cast, awesome character development and a plot that tantalizingly unravels.

PROJECT POWER
GENRE: Sci Fi, Action
STARRING: Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dominique Fishback...
RUN TIME: 1hr 49min
RELEASED: August 14th, 2020

When a pill that gives its users unpredictable superpowers for five minutes hits the streets of New Orleans, a teenage dealer and a local cop must team with an ex-soldier to take down the group responsible for its creation.

The film chronicles a man’s quest to rescue his daughter with the assistance of several allies from sinister threats, behind a newly developed drug that temporarily gifts its user with superhuman abilities. This blockbuster has everything that will excite the viewers; good acting, nice action scenes with nice musical scores and graphics in slow motion. Though the storyline is a bit weak and shallow with not much backstop, this movie packs enough action, blood and explosions to thrill the viewers.

NEW RELEASE MONDAY: MOVIE REVIEW

AN AMERICAN PICKLE
GENRE: Comedy
STARRING: Seth Rogen,  Sarah Snook
RUN TIME: 1hr 29min
RELEASED: August 6th, 2020

The film follows Herschel Greenbaum, a struggling Ashkenazi laborer who emigrates from his shtetl to America in 1920 with dreams of building a better life for his beloved family. One day, while working at his factory job, he falls into a vat of pickles and is brined for 100 years. The brine preserves him perfectly and when he emerges in present-day Brooklyn, he finds that he hasn’t aged a day. But when he seeks out his family, he is horrified to learn that his only surviving relative is his great-grandson, Ben Greenbaum, a mild-mannered computer programmer whom Herschel can’t even begin to understand

This movie is a ridiculous take on the life of a man transferred from the world of 1920's to the modern world. It chronicles his journey in the new world while dealing with his orphaned great grandson attempts to sabotage him at every turn and his eventual realization that he and his relative are one and the same. A good movie for self reflection.
